Topic 3.1: Barriers in preparing healthy meals

  • Lack of access to healthy foods: The limited variety of healthy foods available restricts the possibility of choosing healthy foods
  • Inadequate knowledge/information: Traditional ways of food preparation and cooking methods that people learned from their family is a main reason of lack of knowledge regarding healthy food preparation. 
  • High cost of healthy foods: In addition to the high cost of the food itself, the preparation cost of traditionally prepared foods made them too expensive, prompting food suppliers to meet the needs of the community by avoiding traditional methods of preparation for those that are less expensive and less nutritional.
  • Time limitations to prepare healthy foods: The extra time needed to prepare a healthy meal is a barrier to a healthy diet and increased the trend for families to consume fast foods. Buying ready-made foods allows people to do other chores that otherwise they couldn’t do it.
