Topic 2.11: Examples of Sustainable Supply Chains and Initiatives

In light of today’s changing environment and the different initiatives that are in place to maintain more sustainable practices in the food chain, companies have begun adhering to ecological plans and creating their own strategies to decrease emissions, promote sustainability and push the supply chain in a better direction. Some examples of these are:

Danone – has set ambitious goals to reduce its environmental impact, including becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and using 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

  • focused on promoting sustainable and regenerative agriculture
  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions and using renewable energy sources

Nestlé – has launched a program to help smallholder farmers improve their sustainability practices, which has had a positive impact on the environment and local communities.

Coca-Cola – has implemented sustainable practices in its manufacturing and distribution processes:

  • 90% packaging is recyclable globally
  • goal to replenish 100% of the water it uses in its beverages and production processes
  • 61% of the equivalent bottles and cans they introduced into the market in 2021, being collected for reuse or recycling
