The consumption of seasonal food is highly recommended by NGOs and authorities, due to several benefits:

  • Higher nutritional quality and health effect
  • Often perceived as fresher and tastier
  • Often cheaper to purchase
  • More natural, less use of modern production techniques
  • The carbon footprint might be reduced. Emissions of greenhouse gases may be limited by eating seasonal food, e.g. by avoiding heating of greenhouses, less energy for storage and transportation.
