Identify and apply good practices

Food Sustainability Program | APN – Portuguese Nutrition Association

In 2017, APN launched the Food Sustainability Programme to raise awareness among health professionals and the general population about the importance of food sustainability.

This Programme was adapted for young people between 15 and 18 years old, in order to increase reflection and awareness on this topic, improve food literacy and food choices in everyday life (Portuguese Nutrition Association).

Two examples of resources of this good practice are:

  1. The publication of an e-book on food sustainability (in Portuguese);
  2. The translation into Portuguese of the documentary film “SustainablEating”, by the Spanish Academy of Dietitians-Nutritionists.

Organic products in school canteens – an initiative of the Parish Council of Olivais (Portugal)

In 2015, the Olivais Parish Council, in Lisbon, decided to improve the quality of school meals. This challenge aimed to prepare school meals with organic products in the seven school canteens (1st cycle and one kindergarten).

First, organic products (e.g., sweet potato, onion, courgette, carrot, leek, legumes, and olive oil) were introduced in soups and salads, then organic fruit and meat were integrated in the meals, as well as organic biscuits in school snacks.

The project implied, for example, the training and awareness-raising activities for staff, rethink menus to increase children’s vegetable consumption1.
