Case study

Conceição, 72 years old, lives in Porto (Portugal), with her partner and Bobi, their dog. She was diagnosed with coronary heart disease and Lupus. Nowadays, she is prescribed many different medications. Given her health issues, Conceição must take some care with her dietary habits.

For example, it is important to prioritise foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish, and whole grains as well as consume probiotic foods such as natural yoghurt and kefir.

Conceição loves to cook but she had to reduce the salt intake in her daily life. Cooking with low salt is important, but it is important to be aware that many processed foods (e.g., chips, snacks, biscuits, and breakfast cereals) have salt ‘hidden’ to enhance the flavour. It is very important to learn how to read food labels.

Cut down on salt!

It is estimated that 2.5 million deaths globally could be prevented each year if salt consumption were reduced to the recommended level.

WHO recommends that adults consume less than 5gr of salt per day. It will help to reduce blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and coronary heart attack.
